The Candy Trap: why 10¢ feels so right
The poll up top has one job: to rush you. A pumpkin and a candy for $1.10, the pumpkin a dollar more, and most brains instantly slide 10¢ across the counter. Fast, confident, wrong.
Let's check it together. If the candy costs 10¢, the pumpkin costs $1.10, and the pair rings up at $1.20. Ten cents over. The real split is candy 5¢, pumpkin $1.05: exactly $1.10.
Psychologist Shane Frederick built a famous three-question test around this exact trap (a bat and a ball in the original), and at Harvard, MIT, and Princeton most students grabbed the fast, wrong answer. We're calling the move The Candy Trap: the answer that arrives instantly and feels obvious is the one you check first.

Gus buys a jack-o'-lantern for $8, sells it for $9, buys it back for $10, and sells it again for $11. How much profit does Gus make?
Hint: Treat it as two separate deals.

Deal one: bought at $8, sold at $9, plus a dollar. Deal two: bought at $10, sold at $11, plus another. The famous “lost dollar” feeling comes from mixing two clean deals into one messy story.

Five witches brew five potions in five minutes. How long do a hundred witches need to brew a hundred potions?
Hint: How long does ONE witch need for one potion?

Each witch brews her own potion, and one potion takes five minutes. So a hundred witches, brewing side by side, finish a hundred potions in the same five minutes. The 5-5-5 pattern begs you to say 100: that's The Candy Trap in a pointy hat. This one is the second question on Frederick's test, and the average score there was 1.24 out of 3: most people miss most of it.

A vampire colony doubles every night. In 48 nights it fills the whole crypt. How many nights does it take to fill half the crypt?
Hint: Rewind one night from full.

The colony doubles, so one night before full it was exactly half. Your brain wants 24: half the time for half the crypt. Doubling doesn't do fair shares.
Hint: Multiplication goes first. The internet fought a war about this.

Pumpkin 10, bat 5, ghost 5. Multiplication goes before addition: 10 × 5 = 50, plus the ghost makes 55. Got 75? You went left to right, ignoring the same rulebook that fuels the 8÷2(2+2) internet war.

When Gretchen was 6, her little brother was half her age. This Halloween she turns 40. How old is her brother?
Hint: Half her age was a number, not a lifelong rule.

At 6, half her age meant 3, so he is three years younger. That gap never changes: 40 minus 3 is 37. The trap hopes you keep dividing, because half of 40 feels so clean.

The candy bowl holds chocolate eyeballs and gummy worms, plenty of both. The lights go out. How many candies must you grab to be sure you have two of the same kind?
Hint: Start from the worst luck possible.

Worst case, your first two candies are one of each. Whatever the third one is, it matches one of them. Three grabs, pair guaranteed, no luck required.
Six down. But the arithmetic was the easy part: a sum warns you that a trap is coming. Round two puts the arithmetic away and fights dirty.

You replaced the runner in second; first place is still ahead, jogging in a skeleton onesie. Bonus round: try overtaking the runner in last place. You can't. To pass them, they'd have to be ahead of you.

A rooster lays an egg on the very peak of the witch's crooked roof. Which way does the egg roll?
Hint: Who exactly is laying eggs here?
It doesn't.
Roosters don't lay eggs. Yes, the setup lies to you, and spotting the lie is the whole riddle: the question sprints straight to roof physics, and you politely follow.

Hint: Check all twelve, not the odd one out.
